Customize System Sounds on a Rooted Android Device [Guide]

Permanently add, remove, or replace sounds (survives factory resets)

This was tested on a qin f21 pro if you test it on a different device pls pm me and let me know which device so I can add it to the list of devices tested on


Requirements

  1. Root Explorer App:
    • Use any root-enabled file manager (e.g., Solid Explorer, Mixplorer).
  2. Audio Converter:

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Access System Sound Folders

  • Open your root explorer app and grant root access.
  • Navigate to:
    /product/media/audio  
    
  • Folders include ringtones, alarms, notifications, and ui.

:warning: A Smart Move Would Be To NOT delete/replace original files until you back them up.


2. Convert Your Sound File

  1. Download and install the JTech Audio Converter.
  2. Open the app, navigate to your audio file (MP3, WAV, etc.), and convert it to .ogg format.
  3. Save the file to an easy-to-find location (e.g., /Downloads).

3. Add the Custom Sound

  1. In your root explorer, go to the target folder (e.g., /product/media/audio/ringtones).
  2. Copy/paste your .ogg file here.
  3. Set permissions:
    • Owner: Read/Write
    • Group: Read
    • Others: Read

4. Apply Changes

  1. Reboot your device.
  2. Check Settings > Sound & Vibration to confirm your sound appears.

Troubleshooting

  • Sound not showing?
    • Verify file permissions and location.
    • Ensure the file is correctly converted to .ogg.

:tada: Done! Your custom sound will persist even after a factory reset.


Notes:

  • To remove a sound, delete the .ogg file and reboot.
  • To replace a sound, overwrite the existing file (back it up first!).
