Free Beta MDM: Kdroid Review and Setup Guide

Hi again!

There’s a completely free MDM currently in its beta version called Kdroid. It’s a great option for basic lockdown features. Here’s a quick overview:

:lock: What It Blocks

  • Unapproved Apps: No internet connection allowed to these apps.
  • Device Reset: Locked down.
  • VPN Settings: Blocked.
  • Safe Mode: Disabled.
  • Developer Options: Inaccessible.
  • Multi-user Options: Disabled.
  • Hotspot: Blocked.
  • Time Changes: Prevented.

:iphone: Device Compatibility

  • Minimum Requirements: Android 7 or higher.
  • Supported Devices: Devices with Google services are officially supported.
  • Xiaomi Devices: Installation is possible but may include bugs or require advanced steps (e.g., Mi Unlocking Tool). Guides are available. (not talking about Qin’s. they aren’t Xiaomi devices)
  • OPPO Devices: Not supported, and no future solutions are planned.
  • Important: This uses Google’s FRP protection. A hard reset without the password will permanently lock the device.

Installation is done via a computer program. Choose your platform:

:man_technologist: Follow the instructions in the installer app, or watch the tutorial video within the app. You’ll need USB debugging enabled. Once installed, continue setup on the device.

:gear: Setup Options

Kdroid offers three modes to choose from:

  1. Kosher Mode: Blocks all network connections.
  2. Navigation Only Mode: Allows access to Waze, Pango, Moovit, and Israel Railways.
  3. Mail and IM Only Mode: Grants access to Gmail and GPS apps.

:bulb: Think carefully about which mode suits your needs.

:key: Password Setup

Here’s the annoying part: during setup, you must retype a full שיעור עיון (yes, this is mandatory). Afterward:

  1. Give the device to a trusted friend who doesn’t know much about tech.
  2. Have them set a password for you and ensure they don’t share it unless there’s an emergency.
  • Temporary Block: You can always remove the block using the initial password.
  • Permanent Block: Once satisfied with the block’s performance, navigate to the settings to make it permanent. you have to wait a few days before committing to this.

 Troubleshooting

“My apps aren’t connecting to the network!”

  1. Open the app menu.
  2. Select Tools and check for any errors.
  3. If errors are found, follow the provided instructions.
  4. If no errors are detected, ensure your apps are updated via an official source (most issues stem from outdated apps).

:bulb: Final Thoughts

Kdroid is an excellent option for basic lockdowns. However, for a more stable and app-approving filter, you might prefer eGate. Still, this free MDM gives you full control over the setup and password, making it ideal for self-managed use or temporary restrictions.

  • you can get eGate here
