Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Cellular Carrier (USA)

There are main qualities about a cellular carrier:

  • Cost
  • Specifications
  • Coverage
  • Compatibility

In this post, I will be going through some of the main carriers in the USA that you may be looking into.

Verizon

Cost

  • Postpaid plans: Start at $65/month for one line (unlimited talk, text, and data).
  • Prepaid plans: Start at $35/month (5GB), $50/month for unlimited data.
  • MVNO alternative: Visible ($25/month for unlimited, uses Verizon’s network). Total Wireless ($25/month if you bring own device, unlimited priority data , free international calling, 5 year price guarantee and on and owned by the Verizon network)

Specifications

  • Hotspot: Allowed (usually unlimited), but high speed data is usually limited depending on the plan.
  • Data deprioritization: During high traffic, prepaid plans may slow down.
  • International roaming: Available, but expensive.

Coverage

:white_check_mark: Best overall coverage, especially in rural areas and basements.
:white_check_mark: Strong indoor reception, better than T-Mobile and AT&T in weak areas.
:x: Weaker than AT&T in some parts of the South and Midwest.

Compatibility

:x: Strict activation rules – only Verizon-approved devices work.
:x: Many (non-approved, usually Chinese) dumb phones get rejected while trying to activate it (eg. Qin).
:white_check_mark: Some Verizon-locked flip phones (like Sonim XP3, Kyocera DuraXV) work well.
– Workarounds exist (activating the SIM in another phone first) but are a pain and do not always work.

T-Mobile

Cost

  • Postpaid plans: $60/month for one line, $90/month for Magenta Max (unlimited premium data).
  • Prepaid plans: $15/month (Limited Data), $40/month (unlimited but deprioritized).

Specifications

  • Hotspot: Included, but high speed data is usually limited depending on the plan.
  • Data deprioritization: Prepaid plans get slower speeds in congested areas.
  • International roaming: Free in Canada & Mexico, limited elsewhere.

Coverage

:white_check_mark: Best in cities and suburban areas.
:white_check_mark: Works well indoors, but weaker in rural areas than Verizon.
:x: Some areas in upstate New York, Pennsylvania, and the Midwest have weak T-Mobile coverage.

Compatibility

:white_check_mark: Most lenient carrier for dumb phones – works with Qin, CAT, and other dumb/flip phones.
:white_check_mark: Accepts most unlocked GSM phones, even international imports.
:x: Weak reception in some areas – check coverage before switching.

AT&T

Cost

  • Postpaid plans: Start at $65/month for unlimited.
  • Prepaid plans: $30/month (5GB), $50/month (unlimited but deprioritized).
  • MVNO alternative: Cricket Wireless ($30-55/month).

Specifications

  • Hotspot: Allowed on most plans, but high speed data is usually limited depending on the plan.
  • Data deprioritization: AT&T prepaid speeds slow down during peak hours.
  • International roaming: Good in Mexico & Canada, limited elsewhere.

Coverage

:white_check_mark: Strong coverage in the Southeast and Midwest.
:white_check_mark: Better rural coverage than T-Mobile, but weaker than Verizon.
:x: Weak in basements compared to Verizon.

Compatibility

:x: Strict IMEI checks – many dumb phones are blocked even if the bands are compatible.
:white_check_mark: Some AT&T-locked flip phones work well.

Tello (T-Mobile MVNO)

Cost

  • Cheapest option – $8/month (1GB), $25/month for unlimited.

Specifications

  • Hotspot: Allowed, but capped at 5GB on the unlimited plan.
  • Data deprioritization: Always deprioritized on T-Mobile’s network.
  • International roaming: None.

Coverage

:white_check_mark: Same as T-Mobile, meaning great in cities, weak in rural areas.
:white_check_mark: Uses T-Mobile’s towers but may be deprioritized during congestion.
:x: Not the best for rural users.

Compatibility

:white_check_mark: **Same as T-Mobile – works with Qin, CAT, and other dumb/flip phones.
:white_check_mark: Accepts most unlocked GSM phones, even international imports.
:x: Weak reception in some areas – check coverage before switching.

US Mobile (Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T MVNO)

Cost

  • Regular Plan: $8/month [Must pay for the year up front, monthly is $10] (2GB data) + $3 for unlimited international calling.
  • Data Pooled Plan: $10/month (2GB data + unlimited international calling), each additional line is $8/month.
  • Unlimited Plan: $35/month (unlimited data, deprioritized).

Specifications

  • Hotspot: 10GB limit on unlimited plan. Unlimited Premium allows 50GB/100GB depending on the towers you use.
  • Data deprioritization: Verizon not depriortized for 5G devices. T-Mobile may slow down speeds. AT&T not depriortized on unlimited premium, all other plans have an option for priority data.

Coverage

:white_check_mark: Choice between Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T.
:white_check_mark: Verizon side has great rural coverage, T-Mobile side is best in cities.

Compatibility

:white_check_mark: Best on the T-Mobile side – works with Qin, CAT, and other dumb/flip phones. Accepts most unlocked GSM phones, even international imports.
:white_check_mark: AT&T side works with some phones, but IMEI checks may cause issues.
:x: Verizon side has same activation issues as Verizon postpaid.

Tracfone

Cost

  • $20/month for 2 GB, pay-as-you-go options available.

Specifications

  • Hotspot: Available but slow and low data amounts.
  • Data deprioritization: Always deprioritized.
  • International roaming: Not included.

Coverage

X Uses Verizon Towers only.

Compatibility

:white_check_mark: There are a couple of Tracfone-locked dumb flip phones that work well (assuming you don’t need a lot).
:white_check_mark: Works well with Tracfone-locked flip phones.

Final Thoughts

:small_blue_diamond: Best for Coverage & Reliability: Verizon (but hard to activate some phones).
:small_blue_diamond: Best for Phone Compatibility: T-Mobile / Tello or US Mobile/T-Mobile
:small_blue_diamond: Best for Budget Users: Tello or US Mobile.

Does anyone know about us mobile coverage in lakewood

Works same as Verizon if on warp same as att on dark star and T-Mobile on light speed.

So there’s no difference in the service if you use a service or a MVNO?

Data speed might have a difference but that’s it regarding the service. Let me add that device promotions, customer service, and in-person stores is a big difference

Despite any claims by the provider itself, Im sure its de-prioritized - only because it makes sense that way.

Unless that mvno is owned by Verizon, and Verizon’s network management says itself it’s not de-prioritized, us mobile is not owned by any major carriers

I’ve ran multiple speedtests with postpaid verizon and total wireless in different areas didn’t notice the slightest difference, in fact sometimes postpaid verizon was a bit slower.

How about service in the mountains

What service do you want to know about?

Us mobile or tello or any off brand networks in the mountains

I searched up Fallsburg on https://map.coveragemap.com
T-Mobile & AT&T has barely any coverage (which means T-Mobile, AT&T & Tello are ruled out)
Verizon has somewhat coverage so Verizon and US Mobile (Verizon Version) can work.

TracFone has a gsm sim card

From years ago, now the only new SIM cards are Verizon

Best low data option: Good2Go Mobile.
$60 a year
At&t and T-mobile
Unlimited talk, text, 1 Gb high speed data, unlimited deprioritized data.
Although they claim to give unlimited throttled data, they actually cut you off after 4-5 gb of throttled data.
When they did that to me, customer service wasn’t helpful, so I filed a complaint with the FCC, and now they give me unlimited throttled data.
Throttled data is up to 128 kbps, which means that you’ll be getting around 64 kbps for download and 64 kbps for upload, even if you’re phone is only uploading or downloading.
Overall, I think its a great budget plan.
Their website doesn’t work normally with vpns, so their site won’t work with many filters.
I’ve found that it doesn’t work with TechLoQ or meshimer, but works with NetFree.

Sounds too much like Hello Mobile which got shutdown after the goverment found the owner guilty of millions in fraud.

Sounds scammy if it wont work with vpns

I hear the taanah about the site not working with vpns, but other than that, I’m not sure why you say that it sounds like Hello Mobile.
Just because they also had a $60/year plan?

In regards to VPN’s all it takes is an email to Techloq to fix it.
(they can make specific sites circumvent the VPN)
